Since the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the molecule carry opposite (though partial) charges, nearby water molecules are attracted to each other like tiny little magnets. ... The reason ice floats is because of hydrogen bonding. In water's liquid form, hydrogen bonding pulls water molecules together.
