Most insects respire by the tracheal system (Option - d).

  • Insects are invertebrates belonging to Class Insecta of the largest phylum of the Animal kingdom - Arthropoda.
  • Insects respire by a special system other than the circulatory system called the Tracheal system.
  • They respire through openings in the thorax and abdomen called the Spiracles.
  • It is a network of tubes.
  • Two spiracles are present in each segment of the insect body i.e. 13 pairs.
  • Most of the respiratory demand is met by the Diffusion of gases, also facilitated by the pumping action of segments, but this system is efficient only for bodies of smaller sizes.
  • Respiration through gills takes place in fish.
  • Amphibians example frogs respire through moist skin, they have both lungs and gills to survive both on land and in water.
  • Higher animals like mammals and reptiles respire through the lungs.
