They do not affect rainfall directly. The ocean interacts with the atmosphere, providing heating or cooling depending on the relative temperature of air and water. Cooling air over a large area increases its density, causing a high pressure system to form. Conversely, heating air results in a low pressure system. These systems of sinking cold air and rising hot air are subject to the coriolis force from rotation of the Earth, which causes them to swirl, creating wind. It is the interaction of highs and lows that results in rain.
