Answer:

The major difference between young and old mountains is the level of erosion within an entire mountain range. ... The Appalachian Mountains and Ozark Mountains have flatter tops and have been eroded longer, so they are older.

Old and young mountains differ

  • Young mountains with steep slopes and towering peaks were formed some dozen million years ago. The Himalayas massif in Asia has the youngest and tallest mountains in the world. In contrast, older mountains have rounded tops and gentler slopes due to erosion over hundreds of millions of years.
  • Young fold mountains are taller than Old fold mountains, which are lower than the latter. The slope of old fold mountains is gentle, while the slope of fresh fold mountains is rough. Long, narrow depressions on the earth's surface that are bounded by parallel faults are known as rift valleys.
  • All mountains are subject to ongoing erosion in some capacity, which works to reduce their size. This can be overcome by tectonically active ones with new, rising growth. The Appalachians, however, are unable to counteract the effects of wind or precipitation as a result of the pause in their development. They consequently become smaller.
  • The earth's crust folds as a result of tectonic activity or the collision of tectonic plates, creating the young fold mountains. They have deeper valleys and steeper slopes than the previous fold mountains, and they are also higher.
