Phosphorus have a very stronfg affinity towards oxygen thats why when oppertunity comes P always try to bind with O . Also P is a strong reducing agent it selfly oxidised . And generally it always tries to achieve the +3 or the +5 oxidation state .

This two fact is involves in the reaction of P with conc HNO₃ and that of H2SO4.

Now at first look about the reaction of P with conc HNO₃ here the main product is H3PO4 where P in +5 oxidation state . And P reduces HNO₃ into NO₂ .

P₄ + 20HNO₃ = 20NO₂ + 4H₃PO₄ + 4H₂O
