The north india with its dense population vast level land and good climatic conditions is most appropriate for the growth of railways. The hilly terrains or peninsular region have less dense network due to difficulty of laying tracks through them. The mountainous regions desserts and swampy regions have scarce railway networks due to lack of economic resources and high relief.

the physiographical and economic factors have an essential role to play in the construction of railways:
1. In the northern plains, as the population was vast and the availability of raw materials was profound, the railways could be easily set up there. IN the areas which had rivers and needed bridges to be constructed over them, it was difficult to construct railways over them.
2. In the hills and mountanious regions of the Himalayas, the railways were laid down in tunnels. In vast stretches of the Sahadri, tunnels and ghats were laid down.
3. The railways couldn't be set up in the Gujarat swamps and rainforests of the North eastern states due to unfavourable conditions
4. The Konkan railways was a boon in connecting regions of business importance
