Animals like humans require organic substance to feed themselves. A human may eat either meat or vegetables to sustain his bodily needs. Both of these are organic.
However, plants require minerals, water and light in order to grow. Put a plant without light and it will slowly die. Same goes for water or essential needed minerals. Plants will convert light and water into organic matter in a process known as photosynthesis. Such organic substance can now be eaten by animals in order to maintain their physiology, thus the importance of plants in our ecosystem.
