Plants absorb water from the soil by osmosis. They absorb mineral ions by active transport, against the concentration gradient. Root hair cells are adapted for taking up water and mineral ions by having a large surface area to increase the rate of absorption.

Explanation:

Roots obtain water and minerals from the soil, which is the nearest and richest source of raw materials such as water, nitrogen, phosphorus and other minerals.

At the roots cells in contact with soil actively take up ions creating a concentration difference between the soil and roots.

To eliminate this difference water containing

minerals moves into the root from the soil.
