(B) They obtain water and nutrients from the soil.

Roots: The underground part found in vascular plants which provides anchorage and facilitate absorption of water and minerals. However, in some plants, roots also exist outside the ground called as Aerial roots.

Functions of root:

  • Storage: In some plants called as leguminous plants, roots store food in root nodules.
  • Anchorage: Roots ensure that the plants stand straight by providing proper attachment to the ground.
  • Reproduction: In vegetative reproduction, roots can act as vegetative propagules.

Types of root:

  • Tap root: In this system, the main root is present which give rise to root hairs. example: China rose, Mustard, etc
  • Fibrous root: In this system, the main root gives rise to several root branches. example: Wheat, Rice, etc

In many plants, modifications are present in roots according to their respective needs and habitat like Pneumatophores in swampy regions, Stilt root in maize, Prop root in banyan tree, etc.
