Nitrogen is the component of amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins. However, plants cannot directly utilize this nitrogen from the atmosphere. Certain types of bacteria present in soil covert atmospheric nitrogen into soluble form and add it to soil. Plants then absorb this soluble form of nitrogen from the soil to synthesize proteins.
