Plants take nitrogen from the soil by absorption through their roots as amino acids, nitrate ions, nitrite ions, or ammonium ions. Plants do not get their nitrogen directly from the air.

Plants do not take nitrogen directly from air. Rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of leguminous plants absorb atmospheric nitrogen and convert them into simpler nitrogen compounds called nitrates which can easily be absorbed by plants.
