Poriferans differ from coelenterate animals Poriferans do not have a gastrovascular system because they have a cellular level of organization where individual cells do not form tissues.

while in coelenterates tissue level of organization is found so they can form a gastrovascular cavity. Nematocyst is a specialized cell in the tentacles of coelenterates which helps in defense.

  • Poriferan animals are characterized by porous body, covered with spicules. They have a large cavity (Spongocoel) and a canal system. On the other hand coelenterate animals are characterized by coelenteron cavity, stinging cells (Cnidoblasts). They do not have a canal system and spicules on the body.
