Answer:

Contact process, modern industrial method of producing sulfuric acid; it has largely replaced the chamber, or lead-chamber, process. ... Sulfur dioxide and oxygen, passed over a hot catalyst, unite to form sulfur trioxide, which in turn combines with water to make sulfuric acid.

Step 1: Preparation of Sulphur dioxide

SO2 is prepared by burning sulphur in the presence of excess air so that the product combine with oxygen.

 \boxed{S + O_2 \longrightarrow{SO_2}}

Step 2: Preparation of Sulphur trioxide

Sulphur trioxide is formed when sulphur dioxide reacts with oxygen in the ratio of 1:1 in the presence of V2O5.

\boxed{2SO_2 + O_2 \longrightarrow{2SO_3}}

Step 3: Preparation of concentrated sulphuric acid

The SO3 is reacted with concentrated H2SO4. SO3 cannot be dissolved in water directly as it leads to formation of fog.

The product obtained after this reaction is known as oleum. The oleum is the dissolved in water to obtain concentrated sulphuric acid.

\boxed{H_2SO_4 + SO_3 \longrightarrow{H_2S_2O_7}}

\boxed{H_2S_2O_7 + H_2O \longrightarrow{2H_2SO_4}}
