Push or pull given to a swing, gives kinetic energy and sets the swing in motion. Then the swing moves up against the gravity and then returns again. It continues for some time and stops due to friction at the contacts.
In order that the swing continues to swing for a long duration, each cycle it needs to be given a push or a pull. This force compensates for the energy losses due to friction.
When we push the swing, we apply force horizontally. The support of the swing at the top, pulls it along the chains or ropes. So the swing moves along a circle.
