How do push & pull help in playing on a swing

we push the swing to move forward..... and when its slows down we should pull it towards us to move it again.....

we push the swing and the swing goes foreward because of gravity it comes down and because of its momentum it cames backward and so on.. it became easy because half of the work is done by the gravity
