They do things like repress religion as Mexico's President did in the 1920s, actually sending in Federal troops to shoot priests in their churches and sometimes firing into the congregation. There is a TRUE movie about this called "For Greater Glory" in which a little boy named Jose who refudsed to deny Christ was tortured to death and he was recently canonised (made a saint) by Pope Benedict XVI. Other repressive regimes have imposed Apartheid or Segregation to seperate people by skin colour, imposed a Prohibition against alcohol and brutally shot it out with people delivering alcolhol to consumers, or even outlawed marijuana in 1937 and destroyed tens of thousands of lives over that. Not too sure just what COUNTRIES those were in, but there are some examples of repressive regimes for you.
