River water has extremly high flowing speed therefore when they are made to flow from the hight speed of water increases at the tremendous rate this high velocity water is made to fall on the shaft of turbine which make it rotate dynamo(The electricity generation device) is attached to it which produces a large amount of energy and hence rivers help in generation of electricity

Now you may question how are the rivers made to flow from hight

yes you are right dams are built on there path which stop the flow of water and when water is realeases it generates electricity.
