Plant is in a requirement of water and minerals to prepare it's food and to carry our it's life processes so roots absorb the water and minerals from the soil and helps to complete requirements by plant.

(i) Roots get their minerals from the soil which is transported to the various plant parts by ascent of sap. Hence roots help plants to get their valuable minerals.
(ii) Roots also help plants to gain or obtain water from the soil.The root hair absorbs water from the soil by the process of osmosis.This water is then transported to various plant parts .
(iii) Roots fix the plant to the soil. They are geotrophic and grow towards the soil. They support the plants by fixing them to the soil.
(iv) Roots act as an organ of storage as in some plants like potato it helps in storing valuable food for future purposes.
(v) Roots help in the fixation of nitrogen in the soil . Hence it plays a major role in the Nitrogen Cycle.
