The social psychologist Gordon Allport defines the field as an attempt to understand andexplain how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. Psychological social psychologists focus on individuals' mental processes, whilesociological social psychologists focus on societal factors. Social psychologists research the factors that lead people to behave in a given way in the presence of others and the conditions under which certain behaviors and feelings occur.
