Stars do not really twinkle, they just appear to twinkle when seen from the surface of Earth. The stars twinkle in the night sky because of the effects of our atmosphere. When starlight enters our atmosphere it is affected by winds in the atmosphere and by areas with different temperatures and densities. This causes the light from the star to twinkle when seen from the ground.

The stars are very distent they approximate point sized source of light .Stars seem higher than they actually are because light from the star travels from rarer to denser medium bending every time towards normal. The apparent postion of the star fuctates and the amount of star light entering the eye flickers sometimes appeard brighter and sime times, fainter, which is the twinkling effect.
