The basic ethos of a democracy is the protection of freedom of its people and that of the institutions that play a role in supporting and ensuring this freedom. Popular struggles and movements of free people within a democracy are constant change agents that shape, reform, improve and cement this freedom. Hence, struggles and movements ought to be encouraged in a democracy; throttling these mass activities would have disastrous consequences for a democratic country.
