Water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen are few simple molecules that can cross the cell membrane by diffusion (or osmosis). Diffusion is one principle method of movement of substances within cells.

  • Diffusion: It occurs when particles spread. They move from a region where they are in high concentration to a region where they are in low concentration. Example: Gases.
  • Osmosis: Osmosis is the movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane toward a higher concentration of solute to (lower concentration of solvent). Examples: Gases & Liquid.
