The salivary gland secretes salivary amylase which convert starch into sugars...in the mouth this way they help in digestion

Food enters the mouth and is immediately broken down into smaller pieces by our teeth.

Each part of teeth perform several functions as chewing(premolars, molars), tearing(canine) and bitting(incisors) of food.

And saliva helps to make the process easy.
