shreejaray: Chemical fertilizers helped in increasing yield and quality of crops. However, they also made the soil porous if used a lot. This made the water absorbing capacity of the soil lesser and hence, the groundwater table level decreased. Due to decrease in absorption level, the chemicals in the soil often mixed with the water when it was irrigated. This led to water pollution.
