In the following ways the names of different textiles tell us about their history:

The traders from Europe initially encountered fine cotton garments from India brought by the Arab traders in Mosul (Iraq). So they began quoting these finely manufactured textiles as Muslin.

The Portuguese traders who came to India in search of spices brought back some cotton textiles along with spice to Europe, these cotton textile came to be known as Calico (a word derived from Calicut).

The English word chintz is derived from a Hindi word Chhint Chhint, which is a fabric with tiny colorful flowery design.

Likewise, the word bandanna which is now applied to every brightly dyed and imprinted scarf for the head or neckband was originally a type of brightly colored fabric designed through a practice of tying and dying.
