decidua provides nourishment to the embryo until the definitive placenta forms. Approximately on day 12 of embryonic development, fetal blood vessels (through opening of the maternal vessels) come into contact with maternal blood, forming a region of fetal-maternal exchange.

At the term the human placenta weigjs approximately 500gm. the amnion forms form splitting of the cytotrophoblast .. The fetus floats freely within the amniotic sac connected to the placenta and the mother by the Umbilical cord which contains two Arteries and one Vein..
