how do the reactions of zinc with oxygen, water and acid compare with those of iron with these substances?

Zinc is in a different group to iron on the Periodic Table. This tells us that it does not react the same way as iron does with oxygen. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is not a porous oxide, but forms a dense protective layer that cannot be penetrated by oxygen or water.
