The seeds with hard seed coat do not germinate easily. They need some special treatment before germination like scarification (scratch on hard seed coat). This can be naturally caused when seed goes through a bird’s digestive tract, by heat or chemical changes resulting from a forest fire etc. This can be done artificially by farmers by scratching seed coat by any sharp metallic tool. After scarification, the seeds absorb water that breaks seed coat and allows exchange of gases to help in production of energy by respiration.
