Firecracker rockets consist of gunpowder. When you light a rocket, you set the gunpowder on fire. It starts a combustion reaction which produces gases of more volume than the rocket so they escape from it. As the escape point is narrow and faces downwards, it pushes the rocket upwards as the gases shoot downwards. As the rocket mass is very less, it flies in the sky easily.
