Thermal power plants work by converting heat energy into electric power.

A thermal power station uses turbine. Turbine is a rotary mechanical device that takes energy from flowing fluid and converts it to work. Usually the turbine is steam-driven.

Water is heated,  steam is produced and rotates a steam turbine, which drives an Electric generator. Electric generator converts motive energy into electric power that can be used by external circuits.

After passing through the turbine, condenser condenses the steam and recycles. The water is again given to the point where it was heated first and the process continues.
