THE LINES ARE METAPHORICAL . THE POET IS NOT TALKING ABOUT AN ACTUAL DESERT OR STREAM . HE IS COMPARING REASON TO WATER THAT IRRIGATES AND PURIFIES OR THE DRYNESS OF MEANINGLESS PRACTICES .
