Social divisions are the trump card in politics.
We tend to connect more when we see ourselves as a part of a certain community or group of people. A sense of collectiveness dawns upon us when we identify ourselves as a part of a bigger entity which is made up of other people like you.

Politics uses these factions called divisions and arouse a sense of individuality in them. They arouse them to such a point, sometimes, that they turn hostile towards people of other communities and groups. They inculcate the superiority in them and urge them to 'stand up for themselves’ and 'fight against the injustice being meted out to them'.

As far as doing something to these divisions is concerned, Politics is the sole reason for the existence of these factions. Had it not been for politics, there wouldn't be politicians taking the stage and talking about people we should meet and ones we shouldn't. Politics is the driving factor behind the creation of factions of people who have different ideologies and ways of perceiving things.

A combination of social divisions and politics can be really dangerous. A democracy involves competition among various political parties. As their competition tends to divide society, if they start competing in terms of some existing social divisions, then it can convert those social divisions into political divisions, which can lead to conflict,
violence and even disintegration of the country. An example of this is the disintegration of Yugoslavia into six independent countries.
However, the combination of social divisions and politics is not always negative. The political expression of social divisions allows marginalised and disadvantaged social groups to express their grievances and ask the government to rectify them. The system of reservation of seats in Indian legislatures for the socially disadvantaged has allowed such social groups to have an adequate representation in the decision-making process

(i) Political parties talk about social divisions, make different promises to different communities, look after due representation of various communities and make policies to redress the grievances of the disadvantaged communities.
(ii) Social divisions affect voting in most countries. People from one community tend to prefer a party more than others. In many countries, there are parties that focus only on one community.
