Neon is fifth in mole percentage behind nitrogen, oxygen, argon, andcarbon dioxide. Neon can be obtained from air by fractional distillation. The first step in fractional distillation of airis to change a container of air to a liquid. The liquid air is then allowed towarm up.

By the alternate compressing and expanding of air, most of it can be liquefied. Nitrogenis obtained from liquid air by distillation at -196̊C. The gasobtained by this process is actually a mixture of nitrogenand about 1.25% noble (or “inert”) gases, argon, neon, krypton, and xenon
