Materials move in and out of a cell through the process of diffusion across the plasma membrane i.e. movement of materials from the region of their higher concentration to the region of their lower concentration. It may be simple or faciliated (using protein carriers) diffusion. It may also happen by the use of energy across the concentration gradient.
