Cellular DNA is a information source for making protein.

A section of DNA that helps in providing information for one protein is called genes.

Genes control the traits in an organism.

Take an example of Tallness. It is a characteristic.

We know plants have hormone which can trigger growth. If the production of that hormone is more plant will be tall. The amount of plant hormone produced will depend on efficiency of process for making it.

Now let us consider an enzyme.

If production of that enzyme is more then hormone secreted will be more and plant will be tall.

If gene for that enzyme has an alteration the plant hormone secreted will be less and plant will be short.

Hence we can say that genes control traits in an organism and in this way traits get expressed.
