Here in Denver our dry and unpredictable winters are hard on trees. Oak, ash, catalpa, cottonwood, some hardy maples, and American elms (as long as not within 300 ft. of another elm) seem to be our most durable shade trees. We have generally alkaline soil, so trees here have to tolerate that.

Some trees are fast growing trees with soft wood, usually deciduous and some trees in this category are classed WEEDS. European Paper Birch is one…TOO successful and able to replace indigenous species easily.

They’ve found Bristle Cone Pines that are 5000 years old. Successful survival attributes honed for millenia. Plants were here before animals.
