My most memorable marriage proposal was in 2011 as I left work.
He was close to the exit to where I worked, patiently idly seated. Isn’t that romantic?
As I walked by he stopped me. His face was full of ardor for me and something was making his eyes hazy. Visions of our future? An entire 24 pack or equivalent of beer?

There were often day drinkers around that area of the West Village on Friday evenings by the time I left work, especially in the Summer near all of the college campuses and Washington Square Park.
“I’m so sorry (total stranger),” I told him. “I am already engaged.”
On my way home I kept my prior engagement with a Milky Way bar. It was not drunk and knew exactly what I wanted.
I appreciate the marriage offer but to this day I have no regrets.
Proposals are like being offered empty carbs. If it’s not something you love and really want, it’s a waste to accept and will only hurt you in the long run.
