Scanner and reading devices

Scanner and reading devices helps in saving user time by capturing the data directly from the source document, source document is the original form of the data. Order form, pay checks, time card, invoices are some example of the source documents. Some of the scanner and reading devices are as follows:

• Optical scanner: Optical scanner is defined as he scanner which is a light sensing input device which can read graphics and text and also helps in converting these text and graphics into a form that can be processed by the computer. After scanning a document, user can display the scanned result on screen and can also edit them or change appearance of the scanned documents.

• Optical readers: Optical reader is defined as the device which uses light for reading characters, codes and marks and then converts them into a form which can be processed by the computer. Optical character recognition and optical marks recognition technologies are used by the optical readers.

• Bar cord readers: Bar code reader is defined as a device which uses laser light for reading the bar codes. It can also be called as bar code scanner. Bar code is used for representing the item and the manufacturer. Bar code can be in the form of vertical lines, two dimensional patterns of dots, squares etc.

Answer:

  • The basic principle of a scanner is shining light at the object or document being digitized and directing the reflected light onto a photosensitive element.
  • scanner usually directs the reflected light through a series of mirrors and lenses.
  • In most scanners, the sensing medium is an electronic, light-sensing integrated circuit known as a charged coupled device (CCD).
  •  CCD convert levels of brightness into electronic signals that are then processed into a digital image.
  • Other reading devices like Image and text capture (optical character recognition) work in a same way and allow to save information to a file on a computer. We can then alter or enhance the image, print it out or use it .
