Generally, we did it by hit and trial method but in 11 and 12 class it can also be done by oxidation number method etc.

1) write down the equation.

2) if the number of atoms on both the sides of an equation is not equal then make them equal by adjusting a coefficient in front of the symbols and formulae of the reactants and profucts.

For example :-

Mg + O2 => MgO(skeletal equation)

2Mg + O2 => 2MgO(balanced equation).
