The perception of cold begins when nerves in the skin send impulses to the brain about skin temperature. These impulses respond not only to the temperature of the skin, but also to the rate of change in skin temperature.

Coldness is sensed by our skin. When the temperature of surrounding falls below our favourable temperature a lot of actions occur within our body like the increased blood flow to produce more heat. And the tensing up of body hairs or commonly called goosebumps which is done to trap the body heat and prevent it from escaping into environment. The receptors in our skin sense the fall in temperature and send these signal to the brain/spinal chord. Then the autonomous and central nervous system initiate these defenses to preserve body heat which can otherwise result in death.
