Answers
f by Guru you mean a teacher, the role(ideal) remains much the same. A ‘Guru’ is a person who takes his disciples from darkness to light, from ignorance towards knowledge. The present day teacher also has these responsibilities on shoulders.
But the motive of gurus or teachers, we may say has changed a little. Back then, Guru had no/ little expectations from his disciples. But at present, the situation is very much evident.
The respect for a guru has also undergone a lot of change. A Guru was one of the prominent persons in the society back then, but know , again the situation is very much evident.
People who become teachers and the dignity they have also has changed. We witness many cases where teachers have behaved in a very non dignified manner which should not have been the case. Let’s hope that this be a microscopic minority of teachers.
Back then, teaching was not a profession, but a duty of every Brahmin. Now it is more professional. This adds to the difference. The system of marking and classifying students has put ghee into the fire.
Luckily, there are some teachers who are devoted to their profession and doing their best for the best upbringing of their students. A big salute to all such teachers!
