It doesn't. In fact it takes energy.

The respiratory system is made up of the heart, lungs, veins, blood, and liver. Respiration is what happens after you breath in, so what happens after you breath in? The oxygen goes into the lungs, where it is put into the blood, I’ll get to why in a minute. From there the blood is moved around the body by the movement of the heart. Blood cells revive nutrients and messaging chemicals and take them where they need to go. They don't know where to go, instead the blood just goes everywhere, hence the heart which pumps it around. Oxygen is one such nutrient, required by muscles and the brain to preform basic actions. The liver recycles old blood cells and cleans unwanted or leftover material.

So if the respiratory system doesn't make energy where does it get that energy and how?

The answer is the digestive system. Food and water enters your mouth and is chewed, then travels to the stomach where it is dissolved in acid and stored. It then goes through the small and large intestine which together extract all useful materials, mostly fats. Whatever's left comes out the other end as everyone is familiar.

Both of these work together to power the muscles, our heart and lungs among them. Oxygen is used to oxidize fats that serve as fuel for musles, and our iron rich blood is perfect for carrying oxygen!

I hope this answers your question.
