Sound can be heard due to the principle of vibrations. As a vibrating object can only produce sound. When an objects makes some sound , it vibrates. This vibration causes the air molecules in the surroundings also to vibrate. These molecules transfer their momentum to the next set of molecules and they start vibrating, so the vibrations from the vibrating body reaches our ears through the vibrating air column. In our ears , the eardrum responds to these vibration when the vibrating molecules hit our eardrum , then these vibrations are converted to electrical signals and sent to our brain that we receive as sound.
