Answer:

ACID

An acid is a substance which forms H+ ions in a solution. They are sour in taste, corrosive to metals and produce gas when react with meal.

BASE

A base is a substance which forms OH- ions in a solution. They are bitter in taste and have soapy or slippery in texture.

Answer: With the help of an indicator such as litmus paper

Explanation:

Take aqueous solutions of both the compounds and dip a moist blue litmus paper in it . If the colour changes to red or orange , then it is an acid . If it remains blue or changes into some similar colour like indigo , then this is an indication that it is a base .

If you have the chemical formula for the substances and it is not a practical experiment then there is a way for that too . an acid contains hydrogen ions as the only positive ions while a base is a metallic oxide or hydroxide (in the aqueous solution of which hydroxyl OH⁻ ions are the only negative ions)
