it depends on the question

you should understand the defination properly

  1. curved surface are doesn't includes bases
  2. total surface area includes areas of the bases ( upper and lower )
  3. for example total surface area of a cylinder = 2πrh + base of the two cylinders πr² = 2πr(r+h). and total surface are of hemisphere also includes it base area 2πr² + area of base πr² = 3πr². { here you can add them because you can see the bases }
  4. so in a question if he ask total surface area you add the bases which you can see.
  5. if he asks to find the total surface area of a cone attached to a cylinder then you should add the curved surface area of cone and and curved surface area of cylinder and area of the base of the cylinder. in this you should not add the base of cone and base one cylinder because you can't see them.
