Is air a single substance?

In the past, people used to think that air is just one substance.

Later, it was proven through experiments that air is not a single substance, but a mixture of various gases.

The gases in air are mainly oxygen, nitrogen, a small amount of carbon dioxide, and many other gases. In fact, oxygen and nitrogen together constitute 99% of air, while the remaining 1% is constituted by carbon dioxide and a few other gases and water vapour.

However, the composition of air (the quantity of various elements present in air) may vary from place to place.

Let's learn more about each of these components !
