ANSWER:

The poem ‘Amanda ‘portrays the life of a young girl Amanda who is controlled by her mother. She is asked to sit straight, not allowed to eat chocolates, clean her room and so on. Amanda wishes to escape from the real world. She imagines that she was a mermaid, by which she could live in the emerald sea alone.

Then imagines that she was an orphan, by which she could roam around the streets. Finally she imagines if she were Rapunzel, by which she could live alone in the tower and she will be free to do anything. She liked her hair as that of Rapunzel.

Answer:

Amanda wishes to be free of the confines of reality. She imagines herself as a mermaid, allowing her to live alone in the emerald sea. Then she pretends to be an orphan, allowing her to walk the streets freely. These imaginations and day dreaming show that Amanda wants to escape from the real world.
