Answer: The beggar pulled a billet of wood, set it up between his feet, and tapped it feebly with the axe. The billet wavered and fell down. The beggar tried to chop the billet again cautiously so as not to hit his overshoe or cut off his finger; but the stick fell down again. This shows that the beggar had no previous experience of cutting wood.
