How do we know when to take tan theta or sin theta in a word problem? please help...​

first analyze wht to find in tht problem and the given information..

then look which trigonometric ratio can b used according hypotenuse and sides

tan theta= opp/adj

sin theta= opp/ hyp...

(p.s: and also draw diagram properly...coz with diagram u can solve it easily)
