We pass ethene and water (as a vapour) at high pressure over a suitable catalyst, causing water to add across the double bond of the ethene molecule. The industrial alcohol is somewhat impure because it contains trace quantities of ethylene glycol (1,2-dihydroxyethane, III), which is toxic to humans. It also contains unreacted water, and some dissolved ethene.

Salt is the common name of a substance Sodium Chloride (NaCI), which occurs in the form of transparent cubic crystals. Although salt is most familiar as a food supplement, less than 5% of the salt produced in the United States is used for that purpose. About 70% is used in the chemical industry, mostly as a source of chlorine.
